London Underground front of Train Destination Signs

The ‘1938 stock’ underground train destination signs shown below left were made of enameled steel with brass ends. These fitted in slots behind the lower front window. The numbers 0 - 9 came on three sets of rings and any one number could be shown per slot. I have a few of these original metal signs, those in the images that show both sides of a sibgle pkate. Also some of the number sets are available.

When the plates were damaged through rough handling they were expensive to replace and self-adhesive overlays came about shown to the right of the page. I have the  original unused old stock repair stickers shown in the images below to the right of the page. These hail from the 1960s.


These unused self-adhesive overlays are approx 21 x 4”.. £39 each + £6 UK P&P. The original metal signs are £295 inc UK P&P. Oberseas postage is no problem.

Far more versatile modern dot-matrix signs have made these lovely old signs obsolete. They frame very well.


Below Right. When the metal plates to the left required repair or alteration it was far cheaper and quicker to simply apply a sticker. Below are examples framed and below that a list of those available either framed or sent loose.
